February 26, 1929 – April 23, 2020
I am deeply sad to hear the passing of a leader of the black community in Niagara, Wilma Morrison. She passed at the St. Catharines General Hospital after falling sick to COVID-19.
Wilma Morrison was very active in making sure the story of the Underground Railroad was kept alive.
Wilma will forever remain in my memory. She gave me a chance to understand the story of the black movement in Canada through the prism of the Underground Railroad. As a newcomer to Canada, she enlightened me on the historical journey of the black community in Niagara.
I had a chance to report on her activities including: lectures, church anniversaries, birthday celebrations and community outreach.
She will be missed. Rest In Peace, Wilma.
