The landmark Welland House Hotel was destroyed today by fire that started early morning.
The carcass of the building was smoldering for several hours as firefighters hosed what was left of the building.
St. Catharines Museum@StCMuseum captures the importance of Welland House Hotel, “The Welland House Hotel was our tangible connection to many different threads weaving the history of St. Catharines together.”
The building was under consideration to be designated a Heritage site.
Welland House Hotel was constructed in the 1850s.
